A beautiful hand-blown studio art glass vase by internationally collected American glass artist Randi Solin of Brattleboro, Vermont — signed and dated "Solin 18" in the polished base (2018).
This is a substantial, weighty "color-trap" vessel in the sommerso tradition: deep cobalt blue swirled with rich amber and copper tones, suspended within thick, crystal-clear casing that magnifies the color and gives the piece remarkable depth and light play. The squat, rounded ovoid body is topped by a heavy, polished clear collar that catches and refracts the light. Measuring approximately 7 inches tall by 8 inches wide, it has real presence and heft in the hand.
Solin works glass "like a painter to canvas," layering color in the heat of the furnace so that every piece is original and one-of-a-kind — no two are ever alike. Her work is held in the permanent collections of the White House, several U.S. embassies, and the Beijing World Trade Center, and her studio and gallery pieces in this size class retail in the range of $1,400 to $2,800 (comparable small-format works such as her Fontainebleau Mykonos and Atlantis Flat are listed at $1,600–$2,245). This is a chance to own a signed, dated Solin original at a fraction of gallery cost.
