An exceptionally rare Erté "Applause" cameo art glass vase, number 74 of only 99 worldwide — one of the smallest edition sizes Erté's studio ever issued in glass, and a fraction of the runs of 300 to 1,500 used for his more common serigraphs, plates, and bronzes.
The flared trumpet form is executed in acid-etched cameo glass: a deep cobalt overlay carved back to reveal a frosted white ground beneath. The design depicts a dancer caught mid-bow, arms flung wide, her plumed costume dissolving into sweeping tendrils that spiral around the entire body of the vase. Around the base, a ring of raised applauding hands reaches upward toward her — the detail that gives the piece its name and the reason it's among the most sought-after of Erté's glass designs. The carving is genuinely dimensional; you can feel the relief with a fingertip.
Marks: Etched Erté signature to the side of the vase within the design. Base rim inscribed © Sevenarts Ltd. 74/99.
