This is an antique Rookwood Pottery vase from about 1899, hand-painted by Leona Van Briggle, sister of the famous Artus Van Briggle. It is decorated with nasturtiums in bright orange, with sage and olive-green leaves and long, flowing stems. The design wraps around the shouldered body, and the colors move from deep chocolate brown at the neck to warm amber and orange at the base. The vase is finished in Rookwood’s well-known high-gloss Standard Glaze.
Leona Van Briggle joined Rookwood in 1899, so this vase dates from the start of her time there. The flowing, naturalistic decoration is typical of Rookwood’s work at the turn of the century, as the Art Nouveau style was taking hold.
Marks: The base is impressed with the Rookwood RP flame mark, shape number 533 E, and the incised LVB artist monogram.
Height: Approx. 8 inches
